We had been warned by the Coast Guard boys that the headwind from the North-East will be strong, that is the reason why we rarely seen local tour cyclists travelling on the same direction as ours.On the other hand, there were many on the opposite, from north to south on the east coast, while ours is from the south to north. The headwind is there and did affect our speed, but was not to the extend of extremely hard pedaling. The coastal route 26 was flat and relax, but the climbs started once we turned inland into route 200 where we passed some small villages like Bayau,Tongyuan,Gangzai, the village folks were very friendly, and at one occasion they invited me to try their dishes outside the house, and wanted to know how much if ever they want to visit Malaysia, one of them even has daughter married and migrated to Malaysia. We pumped into 5 local cyclists doing round island trip with very light luggage.4 on road bikes and 1 is a foldable KHS, They plan to complete the round tour in a week and their daily distance is between 150 -180 km, truly crazy fellas. At Ganzai, we joined back to coastal route 26 until Xuhai where once again the route 199 go inland to the mountain before a great downhill to meet up with the main South-Link route 9. The downhill continues wonderfully until Daren where our friend Tony encountered another flat due to overheated rim tape, luckily for him as i witnessed at the back how he masterly brought the unstable bike under control from a downhill speed of about 50 kmh,and slowly wheeled to the side to fix the flat. We end our day at Dawu in the only budget hotel for NTD 800, just in time to avoid the rain that couple with very strong wind. Can't imagine if we were out there camping, our tents might be blown off.
